Invention
Invented in 1891 by an engineer named Whitcomb L. Judson, the “Slide Fastener” or “Clasp Locker” consisted of hooks and eyes to close a bag or boots. The fastener was crude and did have the tendency to open.
The Modern Zipper
In 1913, Swedish-born engineer Gideon Sundback developed a zipper using metal teeth instead of hooks and eyes. His patented invention in 1917 was the forerunner of the modern brass toothed zipper. The name “Zipper” was first used by B. F. Goodrich to describe a rubber boot which used Sundback's fastener.
